Kennard Duane Fearing, age 91, died on August 19th, 2020 in Northfield, Vermont.   He peacefully passed on surrounded by loving family and holding the hand of his wife, Margery Fearing, a hallmark the two were known for throughout their 60-year marriage.  He is survived by daughters Leisa Fearing (Sarah Rosedahl), North Hero, VT, and Marsha (Cara) Fearing, Newton, MA;   two grandsons, Bennett and Beckett; sister Nancy Sanders and nieces Mary Sanders Carlisle and Donna Sanders Huffman.

Ken was born June 8, 1929 in Quincy, Illinois to Robert and Ruby Fearing.  He grew up in Sioux City, Iowa where he was known for his pranks and social life.  There he attended Morningside College, although interrupted his studies to volunteer for service in the United States Army during the Korean War.

Ken served in both the enlisted ranks and the Officers’ Corps, and was awarded the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, United Nations Service Medal,  Combat Infantry Badge, and a Purple Heart.   Following active duty he remained in the Army Reserves for 35 years until retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.  Ken served his country proudly and was a lifelong member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Reserve Officers Association.

Returning to civilian life, Ken completed his undergraduate degree in mathematics at Morningside and earned a graduate degree from the University of South Dakota in education.  He went on to teach in Wyoming, where he met his wife, Margery.  They married and made their way to Iowa City, Iowa where they raised their two daughters and both volunteered for countless community activities.  Ken was a longtime booster for the I-Club and shared a fanatical love of the Iowa Hawkeyes with Margery.  The Fearings moved to Vermont in 2012 to be near family.

Ken had true passion for teaching young adults, coaching, mentoring, and telling jokes.  He retired with many state and national teaching awards in his name after 30 years as head of the mathematics and computer science department at Prairie High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he was known by his nickname “Fred”.

Ken was a lifelong athlete, competing in swimming, track, and football in his youth, and he continued running road races and playing tennis into his eighties.  He planted a vegetable garden every summer, loved tomatoes, and experimented with a hydroponic greenhouse business in the winter.  After retiring, he and Margie wintered in Hawaii where he spent his days in a beach chair with feet in the ocean and a book in hand.

The family invites those who knew him to share their favorite memories of Ken at www.thosearemygenes.com.  Ken’s Celebration of Life Ceremony will be scheduled at a later date to be held in Iowa City, IA, where he will be interred at Memory Gardens Cemetery.

The family thanks the wonderful caregivers at Central Vermont Medical Center,  The Lodge at Shelburne Bay, and Mayo Rehabilitation and Continuing Care in Northfield for ensuring Ken was happy, healthy, and at the side of his beloved Margie during his twilight hours.

Dear Margie and girls, so sorry to learn of Ken's death. Condolences to all of
you. I remember Ken from attending gatherings of the dialysis group from back in the 60s-70s at your home. He was always welcoming. Margie, I did not know you had relocated to Vermont to be near the girls and grandchildren. I have been retired for 10 years. Jim and I still are in our home on Lake Mcbride with the help of our 3 children and 9 grandchildren. We winter in Arizona. Best wishes to all of you. Gloria Bulechek

Sorry to hear of Ken's passing. My contact with Margie and Ken was minimal, but if memory served they used to live next door to us when I was small. Then they moved to the "mosquito flats" area of Iowa City and I babysat for the girls one nite. We had Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass on the stereo. Over the years I ran into both of them periodically, mostly Margie. Sweet and motivated people. All should be proud and he will be missed. Take care.

Fred was my math teacher at Prairie - he was definitely one of my favorite teachers of all time. It was such a joy to be in his class - he made learning fun. He also tutored me for my statistics class at UI, making it so much easier to understand than my college prof. I loved his infectious laugh and great humor! I also remember how he loved to play on words “do you itch a scratch, or scratch an itch”. Fred will live on in my memory. RIP! (Carol Schlesselman Rudd)

It is impossible to think of my time at Prairie High School without thinking of Fred. His infectious laugh and mischievous smile. His wicked intelligence and his grand stories. And his deep and genuine love for his students and teaching. As a student I not only learned while sitting in his class but I learned from the conversations with Fred during free periods and after school. He could have used the time to prep for his class but he always gave the time to us...his students. I was lucky to have many impactful teachers in my life and Fred was one of the best.

So sorry to read in today's paper of Ken's passing. Ken was an active supporter of the Military Affairs Association and active in the Iowa City community. He also ran for County Supervisor as a Republican in a very heavily Democratic county, but it did not dissuade him.

We will miss him. My condolences to his family. Thanks for sharing him with us.

I remember one day they announced that the next day we were having an ugly tie contest. Fred was gone that day so he was unaware that there would be a contest the next day. He came to work the next day dressed as only he could and won the ugly tie contest hands down. He was an absolutely awesome teacher to cared deeply about his students. Some of my fondest memories in high school were because of him. He will be missed.

‘Fred’ always cared deeply about his students really learning math. He was one of my favorite teachers. Before anyone had computers, he allowed some of his students to ‘program’ one in his office. A key influence on the major I pursued in college. He surely has left his mark in many many people. RIP and prayers to the family.

I truly believe that "Fred's" wish to leave smiles behind in his remembrances have been answered! What a fun and nurturing teacher he was. Someone who always seemed to genuinely enjoy his students! He knew how to make what could have been complicated lessons fun to learn and inspire those around him to enjoy life. Was always fascinated by the hydroponic tomatoes too! A life well lived and we appreciate him for it!! 1976 Prairie graduate from his advanced math classes and fun potlucks!! Diane Buresh Reist.

Hawaii

August 19, 2021
I remember visiting Ken and Marge in Honolulu. They so graciously gave us a tour of the area they stayed in, the apartment they had, and some of the watering holes where they could watch Hawkeye basketball games. Ken just loved the beach! Marge loved not being in the winter weather! I couldn't find a picture on my computer to share. But if I find one, I will share it. Sending love and hugs to Marge, Leisa, Marsha and your families. I believe that Ken and Jim walk those beaches together whenever they want, now!

Those Are My Genes!

Ken and Margie were in the stands watching their daughter Marsha's softball game.  Marsha did something amazing, so Ken stands up and yells "Those Are My Genes!"  Margie just gave him the look.

There are so many Ken stories! I remember the picture in the Press Citizen of him mowing his yard that was surrounded by flood water during the flood of 1993. And I'm sure I still have a T-shirt Ken Fearing for Supervisor! But, one of my favorites was when Jim and I went to Hawaii, and Ken and Margie gave us a tour of their winter haven. We had such a wonderful time seeing their home away from home, and getting the low down on where to go to watch Hawkeye games. I have missed you since you moved!! I hope you meet up with Jim on your next journey!!
